“Old bridge – Predeal”

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Below you’ll find a 338 words story about one of my pictures. But these 338 words are amazing. They were written by a very gifted writer and a good friend of mine, Theresa Barker.

Enjoy!

When men were all asleep the snow came flying,/In large white flakes falling on the city brown

– Robert Bridges, “London Snow”

The snow is almost gone now. The bridge waits for what is to come, and that will be either more snowfall, or it will be the thawing of Spring. It is too early for the Spring, even though the bridge does not know that. It does not know the coming of Spring until after the last snow has disappeared, exposing the brown embankment on either end of the bridge that supports the roadway that the bridge carries.

mopana-old-bridge-predeal-01Winter light casts a pale pallor upon the gray-orange railings that protect crossing vehicles and people from cascading onto the naked railroad tracks below. The bridge might wish to be more beautiful, to be more like the newer bridges in another part of the town. Alas, the bridge does not know of the newer bridges, as it never gets out of its own setting to view other parts of town, as it has never has had the chance to communicate with bridges in other parts of the town.

There might have once been an organized meeting of bridges from the surrounding area, a meeting to discuss their working conditions, the amount of maintenance and repair they were given, and whether their traffic had increased or declined over recent years.

Unfortunately, the planning for this meeting was only in the imagination and did not occur in real life. A bridge does not move its moorings easily, and this is a major impediment to any kind of organized meeting.

Nevertheless, this bridge is not downhearted. Every day that an entity passes over its roadway, be it a person, a car, a bicycle, or another type of conveyance, it feels anew the purpose of its existence. It was built to convey things from one side of its roadway to the other. If this is done with convenience and efficiency, the bridge is content.

It could use a new coat of paint.

Look around! …

  1. Beautiful piece. I laughed at the thought of a meeting of bridges. I hope the bridge is soneday renewed with a coat of paint and ensured it’s up to safety standards. To keep being and truly be useful as it’s always been.
