Earlier, I introduced romanian cabbage rolls with polenta, traditional Romanian food for Christmas (see here). I told you also that they are delicious. Now, I’m coming with a story told by my father that circulate in the time of dictator Ceausescu, and that will show you that I am right.
In a year, between 1970 and 1980, a South American president came to Bucharest in an official visit. Before the official dinner he asked romanian president Ceausescu what he will eat. The answer, international menu, did not satisfy the South American president and he asked Ceausescu what is Romanians traditional food and what they drink. Ceausescu said: cabbage rolls with polenta and the drink is tuica or tzuica (plum brandy – Plum strong drink). The guest said that is what he wants to eat. He ate and, apparently, was very pleased.
After a few years, the South American president has visited again Romania. What do you think he asked for the official dinner table?

Mai devreme v-am prezentat sarmalele cu mămăliguţă, mâncarea tradiţională a românilor de Crăciun (vezi aici). V-am spus de asemenea că sunt delicioase. Vin acum cu o poveste spusă de tatăl meu, care circula pe vremea dictatorului Ceauşescu, şi care va demonstra că am dreptate.
Într-un an, între 1970 şi 1980 parcă, a venit la Bucureşti în vizită oficială un şef de stat din America de Sud. Înaintea dineului oficial acesta l-a întrebat pe Ceauşescu ce va servi la masă. Răspunsul cu meniu internaţional nu l-a satisfăcut şi l-a întrebat pe Ceauşescu ce mâncare tradiţională au românii şi ce beau lângă ea. Preşedintele român i-a spus: sarmale cu mămăliguţă şi ţuică (băutură tare din prune). Oaspetele a spus că asta vrea şi el la masă. A mâncat şi, se pare, a fost foarte încântat.
După câţiva ani, şeful de stat din America de Sud a vizitat din nou România. Ce credeţi că a cerut la masa de la dineul oficial?

More good things to try…You know, I can set good limits on my food intake with typical American food but if I can get some new food from other countries, I just can’t get enough.

I’d love to try! The way I’ve had it was semolina cooked, then use a buttery saute with rosemary leaves and panchetta.

What do you use for it?

2 to 3 lbs ground pork (or whatever meat you prefer)
½ cup long grain rice
1-2 onions chopped
parsley
dill
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 L tomato juice
salt and pepper to taste
1 large sour cabbage
15 slices of bacon.
